Bloggers Remember D-Day

I'm glad to see that I was wrong when I thought that the 62nd anniversary of the D-Day invasion would go unremembered.

Hot Air has one of the iconic photos of D-Day with some interesting comments and links to other Hot Air-affiliated blogs.
Argghhh! has a nice roundup, including a link to the often forgotten story of U.S. destroyers who practically beached themselves and engaged in a gun duel with land-based batteries. He also has a nice photo of the USS Saipan, an amphibious assault ship in service today. Quite a contrast with what the U.S. had to conquer Nazi-occupied Europe and the Japanese-occupied Pacific.
Austin Bay reminds us of the cost of that day, and links to stories from the Washington Times and the BBC.
Blackfive has a very nice collection of links, topped off by another iconic D-Day photo - the one of General Eisenhower addressing members of the 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment on the day before D-Day. (And thanks to Blackfive for linking to my posts on the anniversary!)
A closing thought: At the time of the D-Day invasion, Britain and France had been at war with Nazi Germany for almost five years, France had been partially occupied for four years, and Britain under air attack and the threat of invasion for about the same amount of time.
Will we have the patience and determination to see the Global War on Terror (GWOT) to a successful conclusion that our grandparents had in winning the Second World War?
